The Mawddach Trail
The phone hasn't stopped ringing at the local Tourist Information Centre since the BBC screened Julia Bradbury's programme on Railway Walks on the 16th March. The subject this week was the Mawddach Trail, a walk that connects Barmouth with Dolgellau along an old disused railway line, about ten miles in all. Being almost completely level, it allows the walker or cyclist complete freedom to absorb what is quite stunning scenery. On the way are picnic spots and an RSPB bird observatory too.

William Wordsworth certainly agreed in 1824

William Wordsworth described Barmouth thus, " I took a boat and rowed up its sublime Estuary, which many compare with the finest in Scotland. With a fine sea view in front, the mountains behind, the glorious Estuary running eight miles inland, and Cader Idris within compass of a day's walk, Barmouth can always hold its own against any rival." 1824

You can no longer see Bradbury's programme on iplayer but it is available as a DVD. See next link.
